Holidays in Phi Phi Island, Thailand

If you've ever seen a tourist brochure depicting the beaches on Thailand then chances are that you have seen the Phi Phi Islands (also known as Ko Phi Phi), which are as beautiful as the images depict. There are two islands, Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh and though the tsunami did hit part of the main island Phi Phi Don a couple of years ago, the beaches and gorgeous coral reefs remain undisturbed. With fine white sandy beaches, lots of breathtaking rock formations and enticing turquoise waters this paradise resort is perfect for beach dwellers and watersports enthusiasts. As with most of Thailand, the Phi Phi Islands stay hot throughout the year with temperatures regularly staying in excess of 30°C during the winter months. Rainfall peaks in September and October and the islands can be accessed via ferry services that run twice daily from Phuket and Krabi after a flight from the UK to Bangkok, which takes around eleven hours.

Best for...

Whether you wish to bask in the sun or dive in the sea, the Phi Phi Islands bring the brochure images of paradise to life…

With their plethora of riches, the Phi Phi Islands are great for anyone who wants to bask in the sun or enjoy what the sea has to offer. Whether it's watersports, swimming or just tanning on the sand, the Phi Phi Islands have a real vibe of paradise and are ideal for a relaxing or restful break. In recent years the commercial element of the Phi Phi Islands has expanded and the area is now more equipped to cope with a tourist influx, particularly from families and young people. The islands were also used as the setting for The Beach starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

What to do...

The main attraction of the Phi Phi Islands is the unrivalled scenery and beautiful beaches. Lounging around and soaking up the heat is the activity of choice for most visitors but if you feel like something more lively then why not take on the many sporting options in the area such as kayaking, rock climbing, diving and snorkelling. You can also hire boats to explore the hidden coves and speedboats can also be hired if you prefer some more action.

There's plenty to see on your diving missions, not least of which is the King Cruiser wreck that lays only 12m below the surface after sinking near Shark Point in 1997. There are many dive shops that will compete for your business ensuring you don't have to pay over the odds for the voyage, while Ko Mai Phai, which lies just north of Phi Phi Don is another popular retreat. From here you can look down on sharks as many smaller varieties can be spotted from the boat you sail on. There are mini cruises and smaller ferry journeys available.

Despite being only small in size you won't be short of things to do on Phi Phi Don as the island offers plenty of nightlife options. These include lots of Western-style pubs and wild bars. There are plenty of dining opportunities on Phi Phi Island, such as the village of Ton Sai, which is full of shops and small businesses. Central Ton Sai is the best place to eat out with some of the island's leading restaurants including Mama's Restaurant, which is known for its French and Thai dishes and the Ton Sai Seafood Restaurant.

From there, head to the Reggae Bar for a disco, bars and pool tables; the Rolling Stoned bar to experience the in-house live band and the Apache Bar for dancing that runs late into the night. The Phi Phi Islands are often full of travellers hanging out on their gap year and there is a large drug scene.
